1980s Paiste 20" Colorsound 5 Ride - Blue
The Paiste Colorsound 5 20" Ride is a bold throwback to the vibrant '80s, produced between 1983 and 1986 as part of Paiste’s first foray into colour-coated cymbals. With its distinctive red, blue, black, or green enamel finish over CuSn8 bronze (aka 2002 bronze), it wasn’t just about looks—this coating slightly dried the sustain and gave it a more controlled, focused character compared to its uncoated siblings. The ride delivers a crisp, articulate ping with minimal wash and a defined bell, making it a solid choice for punchy, driving patterns in rock and pop settings.
Sonically, the Colorsound 5 20" Ride sits somewhere between the bright shimmer of Paiste’s 2002s and the more tempered response of a medium ride, with a quick decay and a clean, dry stick definition. While the coating reduces overtone build-up, it also gives the cymbal a touch of vintage character. With a medium weight (typically around 2300–2400g), it balances projection and control nicely. Though production ended by the late '80s, the series left a visual and sonic legacy that’s still sought after by players and collectors alike.
In the considerably rarer Blue coating, the Colorsound series were short lived in their original run with Paiste offering Red (most common), Green (second most common), Black (third most) & Blue (rarest) coated cymbals. Paiste has reissued these in the 900 series however are considerably lighter in weight and harsher in tone.
A few stick & tape marks but otherwise sounding great. With a good polish, you could have the shiniest, blue cymbal at the gig!
