The Roland MC-202 MicroComposer, released in 1983, is a portable analogue sequencer-synth that carried the DNA of the SH-101 into a grey plastic box built for programming on the go. Its single VCO with pulse, square, and saw waves runs through a classic Roland filter, capable of everything from rubbery basslines to chirpy leads. The sequencer is famously quirky, with step-time entry and the ability to control external CV/Gate gear alongside its own internal synth. Loved by electronic pioneers and later rediscovered by acid and techno producers, the MC-202 delivers gritty, immediate sounds with a distinctly early-80s Roland vibe.
